What you’ll be responsible for

  • Being recognised as a data and analytics specialist within the organisation.  You will look to use your understanding and knowledge of statistical and other analytical approaches to deliver high quality outcomes that bring substantial business benefit. You will be highly organised, and able to undertake multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met, and outputs are robust and accurate
  • Demonstrating a thorough understanding of the following advanced concepts, acquired through a relevant postgraduate qualification (MSc/PhD) – probability, statistical analysis, operational research, predictive modelling, mathematics and programming - through the planning, execution and implementation of analytical solutions that are fundamentally based upon one or more of these specialist areas
  • Extracting, manipulating and interrogating data, then using Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) methods to obtain initial insight.  You will next be able to build, validate and test analytical models, being able to optimise and tune to achieve optimal performance 
  • Working closely with the Data and Analytics Manager (Data Science), as well as the wider Data Team.  You will be trusted to work both individually and contribute positively to team projects where necessary. 
  • Working closely with stakeholders at all levels across the organisation, and using your critical thinking and problem solving skills to identify issues and propose analytical solutions that support effective data-led decision making. Presenting results to stakeholders through reports and presentation, using your excellent written and oral communication skills.  
  • Be able to communicate effectively with others.  You will be able to present results of analyses clearly and appropriately, and be able to tailor your communication appropriately based upon your audience.  Your storytelling skills will allow you to distil complex technical information into a form that is understandable and easy to present
  • Having the stakeholder management skills required to ensure final solutions are accepted and therefore deployed successfully.  You will be able to articulate the benefit to stakeholders of developed solutions, allowing these to be easily integrated into business-as-usual decision making processes
  • Managing and supporting the development of others within the team, particularly the Data Science Graduates, so that the entire team are able to contribute as fully as possible to the organisation.  You will contribute enthusiastically to team projects, offering your technical knowledge and expertise in order to solve problems collaboratively
  • Using your programming knowledge to analyse data and build capable predictive models.  You will be working with large volumes of data, real-time data, unstructured data etc., and will be able to identify the best approach for tackling projects based upon the relative strengths/weaknesses of each technique
  • Working with emerging cloud computing technology to offload computing work to optimised virtual machines and compute clusters to develop advanced models and scalable applications for structured and unstructured sources of data.  You will have experience of working in a cloud-based environment , such as Microsoft Azure, 
  • Continuously horizon-scanning across a rapidly changing field, assessing how the latest research, techniques and approaches could be implemented to achieve business benefit
  • Undertaking any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business.

About you

The following Qualifications, experience, Knowledg and Skills are considered essential, unless otherwise stated:

 

Qualifications

 

  • Relevant postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in data science, mathematics, computer science, or related discipline


Experience

 

 

  • Demonstrable working experience (min. 2 years) in a relevant technical role
  • Experience of managing individuals - desirable


Knowledge & Skills

 

 

  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day
  • Detailed and technical knowledge of data science and analytical concepts
  • Ability to develop, train, evaluate and deploy analytical tools (e.g. predictive models)
  • Strong programming (coding) skills (e.g. R, Python)
  • Agile project management experience, particularly in the context of analytics projects - desirable
  • Understanding of DevOps – particularly code repositories and version control, containerisation methodologies, and application deployment practices - desirable
  • Experience of application development and web application frameworks (e.g. ASP)  - desirable
  • Good information technology (IT) knowledge and understanding, particularly around databases and data engineering concepts
  • Excellent communication (storytelling) skills; an ability to distil technical concepts in a way that is understood by your audience
  • Experience of using cloud computing (e.g. Microsoft Azure) to undertake analytics - desirable
