What you’ll be responsible for

As a Mechanical Standards Engineer, you will be responsible for providing a steer on key mechanical engineering considerations for the development of strategic business plans or asset policies.  You will enable the delivery of these strategic business plans and asset policies by setting appropriate mechanical standards for the company, i.e. Technical Specifications, Standard Products, and Standard Drawings; and by assessing the acceptability of requests to deviate from the company’s mechanical standards on a case-by-case basis.

 

Your responsibilities will include: 
 

  1. Develop, review and enable company-wide adoption of mechanical Technical Specifications, mechanical requirements for standard products and Standard Drawings in relation to water and wastewater processes and assets; respond to related Technical Queries.
  2. Determine the acceptability of requests to deviate from the company’s mechanical standards based on impacts on cost, risk, performance and other appropriate factors.
  3. Assure compliance to the company’s mechanical standards from internal teams and third parties completing work on their behalf.
  4. Provide a steer on key mechanical engineering considerations for the development of strategic business plans for water and wastewater services or asset policies.
  5. Provide expert mechanical engineering support to the Operations, Local Asset Management and Delivery teams.
  6. Ensure that the company stays up-to-date with and adopts good practice by participating in appropriate external knowledge sharing / development and using internal and external benchmarking.
  7. Work with Innovation, Operations and the supply chain to drive delivery of good practice in mechanical technology, systems and procedures from across and outside the water sector.
  8. Support the Procurement team by preparing technical specifications for inclusion in procurement documents and undertaking technical evaluations of tenders and proposals from the supply chain.
  9. Positively represent the Asset Planning team in working with and influencing internal and external stakeholders.

About you

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills 
 

  • Mechanical Engineering degree, and appropriate experience in mechanical engineering
  • Chartered engineer or equivalent experience
  • Experience in design engineering would be beneficial
  • High level of understanding and experience of mechanical technology, systems and procedures including the requirements for Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR)
  • Ability to deliver innovative ideas and solutions and to provide support to operations and delivery teams
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team whilst maintaining day-to-day activities and tasks.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to produce a credible technical scope of work for others to follow
