What you’ll be responsible for

As a credible member of the Dam Safety Team, you will:

  • Identify and implement National and International best practice from across the reservoir safety and water sectors whilst professionally managing a team of Dam Safety Engineers.
  • Stay up to date with the latest in relevant legislation, standards and guidance, which may affect dam safety including research and developments in the field of reservoir safety


As a Dam Safety Engineering Manager, you will:

1.    Manage your own workload and that of others to ensure projects are designed safely, on time and within budget, working closely with other members of the Asset Design Team including other stakeholders within Asset Strategy.  Take an active role and be responsible as ‘Technical Lead’ for major water scheme solutions being designed across our Engineering Consultancy Framework.

2.    Ensuring effective working relationships with design teams to ensure our customers have trust in our designers and the solutions that we build and have an embedded carbon and sustainability agenda which supports Welsh Water’s delivery of its 2050 vision.

3.    Lead, motivate and support the Asset Design Team across Wales to ensure projects are designed within the statutory, regulatory and financial outputs of the DCWW Business Plan while complying with DCWW procurement processes at all times.

4.    Oversee the selection, induction, performance appraisal and training of the Civil Engineering team to ensure an overall increase in knowledge, experience, responsibility and individual accountability for work related actions.

5.    Participate in training & development in accordance with all Human Resource policies and procedures; including regular contact with your line manager, one to one meetings, performance reviews, identification and fulfilment of safety training needs and development needs.

6.    Maintenance of key performance indicators to monitor and improve the effectiveness of the civil engineering team.

7.    Comply with the Water Services Health & Safety plan through the application of appropriate H&S strategies and ensure all designs comply with the CDM Regulations 2015. 

8.    Ensure that engineering activities are carried out uniformly and to the appropriate DCWW standard specifications. Engage in a robust design review process of technical proposals, 3rd party designs and provide expert professional guidance to the business as required including mentoring others in the Asset Design Team.  Ensure that any 3rd party designs remain on programme and get delivered on time.

9.    Contribute to the achievement of the Asset Strategy key performance indicators which will be used to monitor and improve the effectiveness of the Asset Design Team.  This includes working with our client managers, capital alliance partners, our procurement team, our cost management team and our supply chain to ensure that we deliver cost certainty, guarantee safe solutions and efficient delivery of the annual project workload.

10.    Input into, and participate in robust monthly reporting and reviews with your line manager.

About you

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Qualified to degree level and a Chartered Engineer
  • Design experience (including dam safety) in the Water Industry.
  • A wide range of project and people management skills are required, combined with strong experience in the design of capital projects within the water industry or similar.
  • An ability to think strategically in terms of lifetime costs; by identifying a range of possible solutions and presenting a coherent rationale for a recommended action.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplined engineering team environment whilst maintaining effective day to day delivery of services.
  • The ability to work to tight regulatory and project deadlines.
