What you’ll be responsible for

As the Data and Analytics Manager at Welsh Water, the successful candidate will lead cloud based analytics projects for the business, having the opportunity to use cutting edge cloud-based tools.  The importance of being able to use data and analytics to help achieve our organisational objectives cannot be understated.  The ability to truly utilise data and analytics within our business depends upon our capability to manage and analyse data, and effectively communicate how analytical outputs can be used to make better data-led decisions.  As a Data and Analytics Manager, you will play a key role in leading a high performing specialist function, within the organisational Data Team.

Your responsibilities will include

  1. Being recognised as the leading specialist in your specific data and analytics discipline within the organisation.  You will look to use your deep understanding and knowledge of the specialist area, acquired through advanced level qualifications and broad practical experience, to deliver high quality outcomes that bring substantial business benefit 
  2. Being confidently able to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.  You will be able to influence others through excellent communications skills, and be able to develop mutually beneficial working relationships with relevant stakeholders.  You will be able to communicate with colleagues at all levels of the organisation, using your experience to effectively communicate with Senior stakeholders in particular 
  3. Leading a high performing specialist team, drawing upon previous managerial experience to develop and foster colleagues’ own skills and capabilities, enabling your entire team to contribute fully to organisational objectives.  You will ensure your team is seen as the advisory / facilitating team within the organisation for your specialist field, and will look adopt a supportive stance for business stakeholders so that they are able to utilise the expertise of the team when appropriate
  4. Working closely alongside the Head of Data and the other Data and Analytics Managers within the Data Team.  Being able to fully understand how the internal functions of the Data Team are related, and how coordination and collaborative working can lead to optimal project outputs
  5. A programme of work applicable to your specialist area and made up of specific projects and initiatives.  You will ensure that outputs are robust and successfully delivered on time, and will be able to identify and track benefits that your solutions deliver for the business.  You will ensure that all new proposed projects are successfully evaluated based upon their expected benefits for particular organisational objectives (such as our Measures of Success) so that resource time and effort are directed appropriately to the right priorities
  6. Facilitating discussions with stakeholders, being able to tailor the communication of technical / specialist topics in a way that is understandable to your audience, and in a manner which drives acceptance or further action
  7. Being able to quickly diagnose problems and challenges that impact team performance and/or project delivery, and using your experience to judge possible remedial activities, selecting the best approach for solving the issue
  8. Maintaining innovation as a key driver – recognising the field of data and analytics is developing rapidly, requiring awareness of emerging technologies, methods and approaches belonging to your specialist area, that could be utilised to achieve positive benefits
  9. Being aware of existing policies and principles that are applicable to the role, and being able to work comfortable within these.  You will be able to interpret these policies and procedures and provide managerial direction where appropriate
  10. Flexibly adapting to changing requirements, as directed by the business, and being able to develop creative solutions quickly, based upon your analytical and critical thinking skills, applied to the current situation
  11. Undertaking any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business

About you

All criteria are essential unless otherwise stated.



  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree or MSc relating to your specialist field (e.g. Computer Science, Computing)



  • At least 5 years demonstrable working experience in your specialist field
  • Experience of managing high performing teams
  • Demonstrable experience in a database development/administration role


Knowledge & Skills

  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day
  • Strong information technology (IT) knowledge and understanding
  • Solid technical knowledge of data engineering concepts, particularly designing and creating databases (using dimensional modelling principles etc. where appropriate) and building ETL pipelines (using SSIS, Data Factory or similar).
  • Programming skills (particularly SQL) and knowledge of typical development processes that support agile development (such as code repositories and version control)
  • Security, accessibility and testing practices applicable to data engineering projects
  • Knowledge of software / reporting project lifecycle, from planning and design through to deployment and maintenance 
  • The ability to plan and manage time effectively, allowing for successful coordination of data engineering projects across a number of developers, whilst ensuring set deadlines are met
  • Awareness of data and analytics subject areas (such as data governance, data science and data migration), and how these interrelate and interact
  • Be able to influence at senior levels, and possess excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Strong leadership skills, with a passion for motivating and supporting those around you to deliver high quality outputs
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong problem-solving  and critical thinking skills
