What you’ll be responsible for

As a credible member of the Wastewater Assets Team, you will: 
 

  • Show knowledge and confidence in taking non-regulatory samples. 
  • Deliver the necessary sampling programmes and associated tasks.
  • Work well with other team members, highlighting issues and constraints quickly, including short notice sampling changes. 
  • Have knowledge and experience of, or be willing to accept training for, river sampling and water safety. 
  • Have knowledge and experience of following procedures, safe systems of work and risk assessments controls.


This will include:
 

  • Being responsible for taking non-regulatory samples, including wastewater final effluent, river samples (water quality and macroinvertebrate) as well as other samples deemed necessary for programme delivery, over a wide geographical area
  • Undertaking onsite field testing including pH, conductivity, and temperature 
  • Logging samples using Click Mobile and associated tasks
  • Completing onsite aesthetic visual surveys in line with sampling protocols
  • Undertaking pre-sampling site condition checks (hazards, river level etc)
  • Being open to scrutiny and audit, both internally (IMS, H&S) and externally (NRW/EA) 
  • Identifying and escalating issues found at DCWW assets (i.e. visually poor samples, security) 
  • Working closely with the Project Scientist to ensure that all samples are taken within appropriate timescales and delivered to depot ready for courier collection within required timescale.
  • Being responsible for maintaining any equipment used in sampling and monitoring in accordance with EA guidance & regulation requirements 
  • Occasionally assisting the wider science team where workload allows and there is a business need identified by the Project Scientist
  • Being responsible for the stock control, preparation and co-ordination of sampling bottles and daily resource pack, including requesting consumable orders with the Project Scientist
  • Actively participating in reactive rescheduling as and when required
  • Providing appropriate updates for onsite changes to maintain current site instructions
  • Liaising with external couriers for sample collections
  • Willing of the possibility of very occasional overnight stays for training and H&S purposes

About you

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Full driving license/Ability to travel as job requires 
  • Understand the importance of being a member of a high performing team 
  • Be highly organised and have strong communication skills
  • Able to follow procedures and guidelines, taking responsibility for own actions
  • Able to work to deadlines without compromising safety or quality 
  • Knowledge of IT systems such as Word, Excel and Outlook, GIS, PowerBi
  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day
  • Attention to detail
  • Adaptable to changing priorities
  • Ability to travel and work flexibly as job requires

Good to know

  • Normal working hours, with the occasional late/early/weekend for sampling programme requirements. 
  • This role includes no shift work, stand by or call out rota. 
  • Full driving license is required.
