What you’ll be responsible for

 

Play a lead role on all operational mitigation & asset solution decisions, interfacing with stakeholders to ensure the Water Services business meets its serviceability targets. This will include:

 

  •     Engage operational teams to develop clear understanding of business risks and performance drivers and provide effective support and leadership to deliver business objectives.
  •     Liaising with the Risk Team in collating risks and the application of consistent scoring methodologies and processes.
  •     Ensuring root cause of problems are correctly identified and developing cost effective solutions through sound theoretical understanding, providing cost benefits justifications and recommended timescales for preferred interventions.
  •     Working closely with Catchment, Water Resource, Dam Safety and Network teams to ensure a source to tap approach and clear understanding of any given scheme within the end-to-end process.
  •     Challenging conventional solutions and championing innovative solutions to better meet business objectives.
  •     Selecting appropriate delivery mechanisms for schemes (operational vs capital, mini-Intervention Brief vs Investment Delivery Process, Capital Alliance vs Engineering Delivery Team etc). 
  •     Leading on implementation of optimal operational or outline capital solutions. Facilitating decision making on when capital investment is and is not required in the context of performance and budget challenges.
  •     Developing close working relationships with capital delivery. Ensuring clarity of project scope and continually working to optimise solutions delivered. Assisting with prioritisation of project delivery with reference to operational needs and available resource.
  •     Leading on optimisation of solutions with respect to whole life costs. Considering operational costs and maintenance requirements across all schemes, ensuring that handover is effective and secures the long-term operation and performance of delivered assets.
  •     Influencing capital project implementation to ensure safety, operational and human factors are considered, and that solutions are fit for purpose whilst achieving required statutory and/or business outputs.
  •     Ensuring that the Investment Delivery Process (IDP) is employed for effective scheme management and compliance to business processes.
  •     Controlling project costs, ensuring accurate forecasts and careful accounting of expenditure. Assisting with balancing of the wider investment plan by reprioritising schemes in line with business needs.
  •     Exploiting capex efficiency opportunities, including ongoing costs related to hire equipment, for example. Identifying opex efficiency opportunities and ensuring these are considered in project scope.
  •     Contribute to maintenance improvement activities; influencing operational teams as required and tracking maintenance performance metrics. Championing the use of SAP business systems and condition based and predictive maintenance techniques.
  •     Chairing monthly Client Meetings to ensure effective engagement with operational managers, stakeholder ownership, delivery of programme within timelines and governance of the IDP process.

About you

 

  • A scientific or engineering degree level qualification, or equivalent.
  • An excellent understand of potable water services and operational needs, earned through frontline operational roles. 
  • A proven engineer, able to demonstrate sound technical understanding and ability to propose feasible solutions to business risks and needs.
  • Ability to work within a regulated, procedurally driven business, focused on quality and public health.
  • Demonstrable ability to work at a strategic level overseeing complex programmes in a fast-paced environment, and prioritisation within the context of competing demands.
  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation – from frontline to board.
  • Understanding of maintenance and reliability and how these activities drive asset whole life cost as well as business performance.
  • The ability to develop positive working relationships and represent the business in a credible and professional manner with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly effective critical thinker with ability to influence senior managers and technical specialists, in order to optimise scope and solutions.
  • Commercial and cost management skills – an understand of opex, capex and water industry funding mechanisms.
  • The ability to take initiative and work independently as well as to collaborate effectively within a team, maintaining morale and supporting an inspiring working culture.
  • UK driving licence and ability to travel as job requires.
     

Good to know

 

Work will be split between site and home, approx. 2:3. The incumbent will ideally be required to undertake standby although there may be some flexibility
