What you’ll be responsible for
This is a new and exciting role that will allow you to play a leading role in developing our new cloud-based data platform. You will be leading on the technical data engineering development on the new platform, whilst also supporting our existing set of SQL Servers, that are predominantly used to feed data into a number of analytics products produced by the Data Team to help the business with data-led decision making.
Your responsibilities will include
1. Line managing a small team of database developers and data engineers, supporting newer members of the team (particularly graduates and apprentices) to develop their own understanding
2. Managing and participating in the design and implementation of data engineering projects on both on-premise and cloud based data stacks, delivering efficient solutions that comply with architectural and data security requirements, on time
3. Working closely with the Data Governance and Engineering Manager to ensure relevant strategic objectives (e.g., utilisation of the cloud data platform etc.) successfully progress
4. Being able to work collaboratively as part of a team, whilst also being trusted to work individually where necessary. Approaching collaborative projects with others in a positive manner to problem-solve, and identify viable solutions to overcome issues and challenges
5. Working closely with technical and management colleagues within key teams such as Integrated Technology Services (ITS) – to ensure relevant information technology components and services are in place to accommodate developed solutions
6. Actively horizon-scan across a rapidly changing field, assessing how the latest research, techniques and approaches could be implemented to achieve business benefit
7. Undertaking any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business.

About you
Qualifications
- Relevant undergraduate degree (BSc) in computer science, mathematics or related discipline, relevant long term experience or MCSA/MTA certification
Experience
- Strong level of demonstrable experience in any of the following or related fields: database management, data architecture, data platform management
- Strong level of demonstrable experience using cloud-based data stack (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP)
Knowledge & Skills
Top three -
- Substantial, demonstrable experience of data pipeline design and management
- Solid understanding of database administration activities and principles
- Strong understanding of typical ingestion patterns (e.g. ETL, ELT) and their effective implementation with on-premise and cloud-based environments
Other knowledge & skills
- Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day
- Demonstrable experience of the full software/reporting lifecycle from planning and design through to deployment and maintenance
- Strong understanding of DevOps (or other source control technologies) – particularly code repositories and version control, containerisation methodologies, and application deployment practices (CI/CD pipelines)
- Knowledge of typical data modelling approaches (e.g. Kimball) and experience of working with and building data warehouses
- Data transformation approaches
- Python and SQL programming capabilities
Desirable (should not deter you from applying)
- Data security approaches – e.g. permission models (AD, role-based etc.) and techniques to protect data in certain circumstances (e.g. encryption, masking) - Desirable only
- Experience using the Microsoft data stack (especially Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory) - Desirable only
- Knowledge of the Microsoft BI Stack, including SQL Server Analysis Services, Integration Services and Reporting Services, and Power BI - Desirable only
- Experience using common agile project management principles, particularly in the context of data and analytical project delivery - Desirable only

Location is currently full time UK home working with a view to move into a hybrid model at some point in 2022 (this can be flexible and negotiated).
