What you’ll be responsible for


You will work with our in-house solicitors, in particular, assisting our senior operations Solicitor to support Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s operating teams including on regulatory and environmental prosecutions; property disputes; the exercise and enforcement of statutory powers; recoveries; and environmental law.  


What you’ll be responsible for:


  • Providing pragmatic, commercial and user-friendly legal advice on a variety of contentious and non-contentious matters affecting Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Water, Waste and Retail businesses. 
  • Advising on Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s statutory powers and responsibilities in relation to its water and sewerage assets, for example, to support obtaining access to them and their development.
  • Preparing cases to support Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water in the exercise of its statutory powers of prosecution where its assets have been compromised or placed at risk. 
  • Supporting Estates and Capital Delivery teams in facilitating and delivering Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Asset Management Programme, to enable the enhancement and maintenance of its networks and to support its ambition of becoming a world class, resilient and sustainable water service for future generations.
  • Advising on Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s statutory charging powers and supporting claims for unpaid charges to ensure that its essential services can continued to be funded. 
  • Advising on environmental law and working with Counsel on related contentious matters. 
  • Supporting teams to prepare responses to complaints from customers and third parties that require legal interpretation. 
  • Undertaking legal research and gathering information from a variety of sources for the purposes of providing advice.
  • Accounting to business stakeholders for the progression of work.
  • Communicating learnings and identifying opportunities to share knowledge.

About you


  • Be a qualified Solicitor with 0-2 years PQE (PQE is a guide and other relevant skills, and experience will be considered) and working in a city or regionally based firm, or an in-house legal team
  • Relevant post graduate qualification, e.g., LPC, CILEx
  • Law degree or equivalent 
  • Some experience relevant to your PQE of the work described above and a demonstrable desire to develop your practice in these areas
  • Water industry (or other regulated industry/utility) knowledge (desirable but not essential)  
  • Understand the legislative competence of Senedd Cymru
  • Be able to deliver accurate and reliable advice, in a user-friendly format, whilst building in practical and commercial solutions and developing working relationships built on trust
  • Be a self-starter, highly motivated and proactive in developing your skills and knowledge 
  • Be able to work to tight deadlines, react quickly, and remain calm under pressure
  • Willing to play your part in a friendly and supportive team 
  • Experience of taking responsibility for own performance (including managing a busy workload)
  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day
