What you’ll be responsible for

As an Environmental Regulations Specialist, you will be required to provide expertise to the business in environmental and waste legislation, regulation and policy to ensure that DCWW is recognised by external stakeholders as a responsible steward for the environment and understands and implements the requirements of any regulatory policy or change.  
 

Your responsibilities will include: 
 

  1. Maintaining up to date awareness and understanding of Environmental and Waste Legislation and Regulation and provide scientific and regulatory advice to Operations in the exercise of the Company’s statutory duties.
  2. Communicating to and interpreting impact upon the business any new regulatory policies, in drafting or at concept stage, that may impact the way we operate our assets or how we are required to improve our assets. 
  3. Assisting in the formulation and development of policies and strategies to meet environmental regulatory requirements whilst making recommendations for change and subsequently reviewing the implementation within the business.
  4. Representing the company at WaterUK / water industry TaFs / Regulator TaFs as required on regulatory matters and ensuring the tactical application of them within DCWW.
  5. Developing and fostering effective relationships with external stakeholders and environmental regulators to ensure DCWW are proactively managing its regulatory responsibilities. Be the point of contact in the region for the regulator with regards to innovative regulation of our environmental discharges e.g. supporting catchment permitting methods.
  6. Provision of expert regulatory advice to the capital programme to ensure scheme solutions meet the regulatory requirements and AMP outcomes. Provide expert advice to them for the accurate submission of any necessary permit variations.
  7. Supporting the formulation of responses to consultations that DCWW should respond on.
  8. Supporting the environmental regulatory activities associated with the development of future National Environment Programmes (NEP).
  9. Supporting the business (operational and asset teams) with operator initiated permit variations and leading required discussions with regulators on these variations.
  10. Be the point of contact for the provision of permitting and regulatory information to support any permit appeals, legal challenges or cases to support DCWW’s legal team in any environmental regulation matter.

About you

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
 

  • A science or engineering degree, or equivalent professional qualification
  • Ideally 10 years experience of working with environmental regulators and a track record of collaboration
  • Project Management experience or experience of delivering programmes of work to tight regulatory timescales
  • Experience of dealing with environmental regulators (or other regulatory body), and building relationships with external agencies identifying opportunities for collaborative working and reducing organisational workload 
  • Experience of managing people, preferably within a regulated setting
  • Substantial knowledge of the implementation of the 2016 EPR.
  • Able to analyse data in large amounts and understand the importance of accuracy in that information. Be focussed on attention to detail and understand the consequences of wrong information given to colleagues and external stakeholders. information accurately.
  • Communication Skills – The drive and ability to exchange appropriate 
  • Information with relevant people at the right time. The desire and skills to seek first to understand as well as to be understood. 
  • Experience of managing people, preferably within a regulated setting
  • Corporate Representation - The enthusiasm and ability to always project a positive and professional image of DCWW with all contacts and stakeholders.
  • Integrity - The readiness to take responsibility for projects or issues and to be accountable for their timely delivery and quality. The capacity and motivation to fulfil consistently any undertakings made. The habit of never letting people down or promising what can’t be done.
  • Leadership Skills – proven experience of the ability to lead and develop a successful team, be able to manage change
