What we do
The Civil design team in Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water (DCWW) are responsible for the delivery of a planned capital maintenance programme that will spend approximately £80M per year until 2025 on new and existing potable and wastewater assets in Wales. The design engineering department are part of the internal capital delivery team of DCWW and as such are part of the capital delivery alliance that along with partner companies design and deliver a wide range of capital projects throughout Wales.
What you’ll do
As a competent Civil design engineer you will join part of our Capital Delivery team providing engineering support to our major investment programme as part of the Capital Delivery Alliance in AMP7 and beyond. The projects included within the programme vary in scale and complexity encompassing maintenance and improvement works to all of Welsh Water’s assets. This could include dams, pipelines, treatment works, pumping stations, and various others within our ownership throughout Wales providing a varied range of projects in the water industry.
1. Ensure projects are designed safely on time and within budget, working closely with other members of the Capital Engineering Team and with other business stakeholders.
2. Lead, motivate and support the Civil Engineering Team across Wales to ensure projects are designed within the statutory, regulatory, and financial outputs of the Welsh Water Business Plan while complying with Welsh Water procurement processes at all times.
3. Participate in training & development in accordance with all Human Resource policies and procedures, including regular contact with your line manager, one to one meetings, performance reviews, identification and fulfilment of safety training needs and development needs.
4. Comply with the Capital Delivery Health & Safety plan through the application of appropriate H&S strategies and ensure all designs comply with the CDM Regulations 2015.
5. Ensure that engineering activities are carried out uniformly and to the appropriate Welsh Water standard specifications. Engage in a robust design review process of technical proposals, 3rd party designs and provide expert professional guidance to the business as required including mentoring others in the Capital Delivery Team.
6. Contribute to the achievement of the Capital Alliance business plan which will be used to monitor and improve the effectiveness of the in-house design department. This includes working with our alliance partners, our procurement teams, and our supply chain to ensure that we guarantee cost effective and efficient delivery of the annual project workload.

About you
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Qualified to degree level and a Chartered Engineer (or working towards CEng).
- Design experience in the Water Industry.
- A wide range of project and people management skills are required, combined with strong experience in the design of capital projects within the water industry or similar.
- An ability to think strategically in terms of lifetime costs; by identifying a range of possible solutions and presenting a coherent rationale for a recommended action.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplined engineering team environment whilst maintaining effective day to day delivery of services.
- The ability to work to tight regulatory and project deadlines.
Good to know
Location: North Wales (Kinmel Park) or South Wales (Ty-Awen / Clydach) – to be discussed at interview.
Flexible working - there will be an expectation to attend key meetings and be a presence in the office to ensure the development of junior engineers in your team.
