What you’ll be responsible for

As a Science Manager, you will be responsible for leading a team of Process and Trade Effluent Scientists and prioritising workloads to enable timely solutions to Wastewater Process and Trade Effluent problems.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Protecting Welsh Water’s wastewater network, treatment assets, processes and the receiving environment from the effects of WWTW’s effluent discharges and associated trade effluent discharges to public sewer
  2. Working closely with the Welsh Water Operation Team to ensure the process quality at wastewater treatment works is maintained and that effluent is produced within Regulatory boundaries
  3. Being an authority on all matters pertaining to wastewater treatment process and trade effluent
  4. Facilitating a professional perception by internal and external stakeholders
  5. Directing a local team of trade effluent officers to ensure that specialised technical enquires from customers are dealt with within the appropriate timescales and that appropriate levels of support, investigation & remediation are provided to maximise income whilst minimising business risk to compliance
  6. Providing scientific expertise and direction necessary to ensure high quality cost effective process operation at all sites. Critically appraising wastewater treatment processes, to ensure that both cost and treatment are optimised
  7. Providing expert support to Welsh Water colleagues on wastewater treatment processes and trade effluent
  8. Ensuring procedures and activities comply with all H&S legislation and Welsh Water Health &Safety policy in maintaining a safe working environment
  9. Ensuring that H&S requirements are met within the teams and that where necessary, risk assessments are carried out
  10. Being the authority on all matters pertaining to wastewater treatment process and trade effluent matters in the Wastewater business area
  11. Delivering Welsh Water Trade Effluent policy in protecting its assets, ensuring TE income is maximised with a balanced approach based on network and WWTW capacity implemented by the correct application and implementation of TE discharge consents
  12. Approving proposed solutions to complex trade effluent complaints and queries, and ensuring that remedial plans are adequate
  13. Taking a leading role in the handling of all Trade Effluent matters ensuring income is maximised whilst regulatory risk is minimised
  14. Developing, owning and maintaining wastewater policies and strategies to ensure the implementation of current and future legislation relating to wastewater process and Trade Effluent control
  15. Initiating, managing and reporting on improvement measures to reduce regulatory compliance risk at Wastewater Treatment Works
  16. Ensuring that compliance sample failures are investigated to find the root cause of failures including lessons learnt and any actions required to prevent further occurrences

About you

Knowledge, Skills & Experience 

 

  • Minimum qualification of a degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent    
  • Must have a valid UK driving licence
  • A comprehensive understanding of Environmental Legislation and Codes of Practice    
  • Be considered an expert on all matters pertaining to waste water treatment and trade effluent    
  • Must be able to understand fundamental control and instrumentation philosophies    
  • Must have a knowledge and experience of wastewater science and treatment    
  • Have a proven ability in process fault analysis    
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills    
  • Ability to multi task and prioritise workload    
  • Must have a working knowledge of all regulations affecting water supply
