What you’ll be responsible for

As a Water Process Scientist, you will be required to proactively strive for ‘best practice’ water treatment by, applying scientific knowledge and expertise to ensure water treatment processes consistently produce regulatory compliant water. Using technical experience and practical skills to continually appraise water treatment to produce wholesome water. 


Your key responsibilities will include:
 

  1. Working closely with the operations teams to ensure the water quality at treatment works is maintained
  2. Initiating, managing and reporting on improvement measures to produce regulatory compliant/wholesome water at water treatment works
  3. Critically appraising and reviewing water treatment processes to ensure that the end product is compliant with the Water Supply Regulations and contractual KPIs
  4. Actively participating in the investigation of water quality and chemical failures to find the root cause of failures including lessons learnt and any actions required to prevent further occurrences
  5. Providing advice and guidance to recommend improvement actions in order to optimise plant performance and ensure the most cost effective treatment is provided while maintaining quality objectives and targets
  6. Introducing new processes, procedures and instructions when necessary for plant enhancements and to provide guidance to plant operators
  7. Advising on any associated environmental discharges. Providing guidance regarding discharge consent limits. Liaising with the EA when necessary
  8. Reviewing sludge treatment/dirty wash water processes and implementing any remedial measures following any discharge incidents
  9. Contributing to Drinking Water Safety Plan annual reviews to highlight any risks and any updates required after WTW incidents
  10. Producing POF020s to appraise site specific disinfection strategy to comply with Regulation 27 and DCWW technical specifications
  11. Gaining knowledge of industry best practice and/or new technology for optimisation of water treatment and/or energy efficiencies
  12. Compiling WTW weekly quality performance checks and monthly statistical reports
  13. Assisting in the commissioning of new plant installations and liaising with the capital department and/or external contractors

About you

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills 

  • Ideally hold a minimum qualification of a degree in a scientific discipline    
  • Valid UK driving licence    
  • Must be able to understand fundamental control and instrumentation philosophies    
  • Understanding of water science and treatment    
  • Proven ability in process fault analysis    
  • Good interpersonal skills    
  • Able to multi task and prioritise workload    
  • Working knowledge of regulations affecting water supply

Good to know

  • The successful candidate will require to participate in an out of hours standby on a 1 in 6 rota (subject to change) covering 12 WTW’s across SW Wales.  
  • Hybrid working
  • A full UK Drivers Licence is required for the role
